No Response to Japan’s Imperial Birth

Seoul decided not to send a message to Tokyo, congratulating Japan's Princess Kiko giving birth to the royal family's first male heir on Wednesday, an official at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade said on Thursday.
``We examined the measure of sending a congratulatory message because it is an event to celebrate,’’ the official told The Korea Times. ``But we decided not to do so.’’
He said there are ``no clear reasons’’ as to why such a decision was made.
The relations between Seoul and Tokyo have been in a lowest ebb due to Japan's claim to South Korea's easternmost islets Dokdo in the East Sea and attempts to glorify its wartime atrocities.
Kiko, 39, gave birth to the first male heir in four decades, putting to rest controversy over whether Tokyo should allow women to succeed the royal family.
Newspapers ran out extra editions, supporters gathered outside the hospital where Kiko gave birth, and TV networks ran continuous coverage of the delivery and profiles of the princess and her courtship with Akishino, the Associated Press reported.
She underwent a Caesarean section at a Tokyo hospital, bearing a boy who is third in line to the throne after Crown Prince Naruhito and Kiko's husband, Prince Akishino, 40.
